Insights
Forecasted heat across eastern and southern PJM aligned with the RTO load peak, with Washington DC near 91°F, Richmond near 90°F, Philadelphia in the mid- to upper-80s, and Newark in the upper-80s around HE17-18. That supported strong cooling demand and helped push actual PJM load to a 135.2 GW peak in HE18, while cooler conditions in Chicago in the low- to mid-70s and Pittsburgh/Columbus mostly in the mid-70s to low-80s moderated load in western and northern areas.
Real-time pricing was stronger than day-ahead on average, with DA LMP averaging about $50.17/MWh versus RT LMP at about $53.86/MWh, producing an average DART of -$3.69/MWh. The most notable RT strength occurred in HE18-21 as load remained above forecast, solar output declined quickly into the evening, wind output stayed below 1 GW, and gas and coal output moved to elevated levels to cover rising net load.
